The NJS after school hockey season 22/23 saw this years 5th and 6th class students improve greatly not only on their skills but their game play. A great mix of boys and girls and lovely to see the more experienced club players helping the less experienced players throughout the season.
With at least two coaches each week the children got lots of one on one attention whether on the NJS Astro or training on the senior school pitch.
Before Christmas NJS competed in a blitz against Christchurch NS on a lovely bright winters day. NJS were well prepared and confident on the pitch resulting in winning all their games.
Newtown hosted the first ever Waterford Interschools hockey tournament in April on a beautiful, sunny, spring morning. With over 100 students and 16 teams from different schools around the county all competing for the new annual Johnson Family Cup it was a competitive morning. NJS had two teams competing, one got knocked out in the semi final to a strong Stradbally side after extra time. The second NJS team got to the final and played their hearts out, unfortunately it wasn’t their day and they were beaten 1-0 to Stradbally thus finishing as runners up.
The tournament was a perfect end to a fun filled season and we wish the outgoing 6th class the best of luck with their hockey in the future.
Thanks to Charlotte and Amanda for their commitment coaching this season, to Newtown for generously letting us host competitions and to the Johnson Family for sponsoring the new annual Interschools cup.
Looking forward to seeing next seasons students for another fun term of hockey.
