Our NJS school hockey players from 4th, 5th and 6th class turned up in great spirits for their first match of the season against Stradbally in Newtown school yesterday.
It was a beautiful mild evening which brought out many supporters, it was great to see parents, siblings and friends on the sidelines to cheer on NJS.
There were 4 games running consistently and all players got to experience lots of game time, the first for quite a few of our new players.
6th class (with the help of two ex NJS siblings) came up against very strong Stradbally side many of whom used their experienced GAA skills. However Newtown kept their composure and held them back even managing to score a few goals against the team in red.
5th class were a very enthusiastic bunch none of whom play club hockey and all only started last September. Their team spirit and camaraderie is to be admired and great to see their skills and spatial awareness developing. They scored many goals and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
4th class are a very sporty group both boys and girls, and hockey seems to come naturally to them. Thus it comes as no surprise to any one who knows this group that they were very competitive and enjoyed scoring as many goals as they could. However they still managed to display good sportsmanship and worked really well together. Looking forward to seeing these talented kids play hockey into their teens and hopefully beyond.
A special thanks to Aine and all those that traveled from Stradbally, Newtown TY students Katie, Zara and past NJS pupils Fia and Georgia for umpiring and to Charlotte and Amanda for their coaching throughout the year.
